Mother and Child together, forever

16.5 x 12 inches,
made in the studio - Feb 2001
$ 250

The only work I made of this genre available, I was working with the model who asked if she could bring her newly born child to the session. It made for good subject matter. I feel this work speaks something of the destiny of both that tender child and their life together. The child looks up to the mother, while the mother looks at the child but also through the child with expression that signals concern. Responsibility, care, a future uncertain....so many mothers from around the world, no doubt know these feelings.

A path with a view

oil on thick masonite - 5 x 15 inches
painted on location - Fri 30 May 2014
SOLD

Yes ladies and gentlemen, right here in my dunes, are some of the finest views a painter can ask for! Fortunately for me, I don't have to take a flight or a train.  Just a matter of loading up my gear, parking my car for FREE, and a meditative walk through the dunes.  I was visiting the owner of Pier 32, talking about painting possibilities. On the way back was struck by this view, I couldn't resist! A small panoramic study, works well, for sure will make a large painting of this same view.

The conversation

oil on canvas ~ 9 x 11 inches
painted on location, Tuesday  13 May 2014

$ 445

A lovely sunny afternoon, still quite windy and somewhat chilly, here on the coast of the North Sea. However these two girls found that by setting low, the wind  passes over them, thus the warmth of the Sun has a soothing feel.

Blowin' in the wind

oil on mdf panel - 6 x 16 inches
painted on location - Tues. 15 April 2014

$ 225

The wind is playing a major role in this painting. It was blowing really hard on this little panoramic view, as is evident by looking at those banners on the poles just in front of that beach cafe.  As you can see the seagulls just love it! All they have to do is spread their wings and the wind sways them along so graciously.

The Quite beach is alive #2-2014

South Beach, DH
oil on mdf - 40 x 122 cm
painted on location - Fri 21 March 2014
$ 850

Yes indeed, in this scenario it certainly is alive! Sand drifts happening right before my very eyes, water puddles forming and flowing with the direction of the wind. It is a good thing that that pier at the end of this beach was preventing the sand from blowing over into Scheveningen, otherwise the boulevard would have certainly been buried under! Life is starting to pick up, you can see 2 beach pavilions already in operation.

Kite surfer and children at the beach

oil on canvas - 50 x 50 cm
painted on location - South Beach, The Hague
SOLD

As you can see the hot summer temperatures are still not with us, as the wind is still blowin' hard. However it didn't stop these kids from having a blast at the waters edge, as they were enjoying jumping about at the incoming waves. The little sister looks on and keeps guard of the soccer ball. In the distance a kite surfer blasting through the waves, man do those guys move fast!

The Yellow Buoy and You

oil on canvas - 70 x 50 cm
painted on location - Fri 21 Feb 2014
$ 650

Picture yourself walking on this quite strip of beach.  You alone, far away from the noisy crowds in the bustling city centre. Very far away from those busy roadways, were traffic jams are guaranteed during  rush hour.  Maybe you have a pet dog, that needs it's daily exercise, or maybe you just doing it for yourself, as these quality 'alone' times are definitely almost obligatory in life as we know it today!  Whatever your situation, I make it my vocation to capture and record these special moments, on a piece of linen with oil colours, that not only you may enjoy and meditate upon, but whom ever takes the time to gaze and reflect upon it, also will.

Free the Mind

oil on canvas - 10 x 14 inches
painted on location -  Scheveningen
SOLD

Don't have the time or possibility to get to the Sea.  Allow me to bring it to you.   Breath in that fresh salty air, allow it to rejuvenate your Spirit, loosen up those murky cobwebs hangin' about!.....  Hard to believe that this was painted just two days ago on the beach here in Holland! Seems we have been spared the winter thus far.  Early in the morning, when the light is just right,  highlighting those waves rolling in. Creating a scene that would inspire goodness and well being, even to the most defiant ones. A gift from Mother Nature to you, and it is there for the taking.

De Gazelle, Amsterdam

oil on canvas - 14 x 30 inches
painted on location and in studio - Dec 2013/Jan 2014

(private collection - Amsterdam)

Was indeed a pleasure for me to work on this characteristic old vessel that was originally designed as a cargo ship for the North Sea. Now used for living/dwelling by its owner Don, who can be seen on the deck.
The play of light was most important, thus on location in the morning! Left out all the modern buildings on the other side of canal, as desired by the present owner of this work.

After the Storm, South Beach, The Hague

oil on canvas - 20 x 39  inches
painted - Fri 10 Jan 2014
$900. (€675)

First plein - air painting of the new year, and am glad I had the chance to begin it with a bang, (loud, busy painting). I choose to stay close to the dunes, somewhat protected from the wind and besides the composition was just what I needed. With these conditions, rather difficult to work this size, outdoors on location.  Was lucky could  position my canvas in the direction of the wind, and had to anchor my gear down with a bag full of sand,  thus got the job done!

Two sailors in red and a yellow buoy.

oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
painted on location - Wed  30 Oct 2013
SOLD

Thank God we were granted some blue sky last week, with strong yet manageable windy conditions. Also I am grateful for having this window of time in order to get this painting done. Positioning myself as close to the shoreline as possible, and with the use of my trustworthy 3m parasol which I lay on its side and use as a wind breaker, I got on my knees and prayed that I might make something of the spectacular display of clouds and waves before me.

Happy summers memory

oil on canvas - 60 x 80cm
painted on location - 5 May 2013/reworked in studio 10 October 2013
SOLD

Unless you are following me on Facebook, you haven't seen this painting as yet. Made during the Glory Painters Festival, April/May 2013, at Bergen Aan Zee,  however  not quite happy with the result I freshened it up yesterday afternoon. This week has been a right off for me to be on location, rain, rain, and more rain. Mind you a few sunny bursts here and there, between the heavy laden dark clouds. Felt I would like to bring to your monitor this gay scene of a happy child running to the beach from up high in the dunes. Funny the name of the cafe on the left is Rembrandt Aan Zee.

Dahlia pickers, Zundert, Holland

oil on canvas - 70 x 90 cm,
painted on location -  1 sept 2007 (repainted Aug 2012)
SOLD

This is the second large format work I painted on the Zundert Schildersfestival. Made in the early afternoon, at the same dahlia field as yesterdays Wet Painting, (only from a different view point). Luckily for me there came along flower pickers, as it was the last day to prepare the floats for the famous blomen corso. They added a nice accent to the composition, The horizon line was also made interesting due to the wind effect on the trees. Painting the amazing Dutch sky was also a challenge as the clouds were definitely in a hurry to get somewhere.

Summer at South Beach, The Hague

oil on MDF - 10 x 19 inches
painted - Sat  6 July 2013
SOLD

Yeah, yeah summer at last, temperatures have finally climbed up to Sun bathing conditions. A slight breeze sets the conditions right to manoeuvre these cats. Not a great challenge, but maybe time to take the kids along, so they could learn about sailing. Meanwhile hundreds of Haagenaars are enjoying this quite strip of beach, situated between busy Scheveningen and Kijkduin.

Clouds with a rough sea

oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
Thurs 27 June 2013
SOLD

As Constable once said, "The sky governs everything," Of course he was referring to light and values of colour on a given landscape, or in my case, a seascape. With the sunlight breaking through the scattered voluminous clouds, the sea was giving off an intense deep hue of greenish blue. Not too many people on the beach, however kite surfers enough! I decided to keep it simple, thus providing a generic seascape with the least of elements to give it a reference.
