The conversation

oil on canvas ~ 9 x 11 inches
painted on location, Tuesday  13 May 2014

$ 445

A lovely sunny afternoon, still quite windy and somewhat chilly, here on the coast of the North Sea. However these two girls found that by setting low, the wind  passes over them, thus the warmth of the Sun has a soothing feel.

Blowin' in the wind

oil on mdf panel - 6 x 16 inches
painted on location - Tues. 15 April 2014

$ 225

The wind is playing a major role in this painting. It was blowing really hard on this little panoramic view, as is evident by looking at those banners on the poles just in front of that beach cafe.  As you can see the seagulls just love it! All they have to do is spread their wings and the wind sways them along so graciously.

The Quite beach is alive #2-2014

South Beach, DH
oil on mdf - 40 x 122 cm
painted on location - Fri 21 March 2014
$ 850

Yes indeed, in this scenario it certainly is alive! Sand drifts happening right before my very eyes, water puddles forming and flowing with the direction of the wind. It is a good thing that that pier at the end of this beach was preventing the sand from blowing over into Scheveningen, otherwise the boulevard would have certainly been buried under! Life is starting to pick up, you can see 2 beach pavilions already in operation.

Kite surfer and children at the beach

oil on canvas - 50 x 50 cm
painted on location - South Beach, The Hague
SOLD

As you can see the hot summer temperatures are still not with us, as the wind is still blowin' hard. However it didn't stop these kids from having a blast at the waters edge, as they were enjoying jumping about at the incoming waves. The little sister looks on and keeps guard of the soccer ball. In the distance a kite surfer blasting through the waves, man do those guys move fast!

The Yellow Buoy and You

oil on canvas - 70 x 50 cm
painted on location - Fri 21 Feb 2014
$ 650

Picture yourself walking on this quite strip of beach.  You alone, far away from the noisy crowds in the bustling city centre. Very far away from those busy roadways, were traffic jams are guaranteed during  rush hour.  Maybe you have a pet dog, that needs it's daily exercise, or maybe you just doing it for yourself, as these quality 'alone' times are definitely almost obligatory in life as we know it today!  Whatever your situation, I make it my vocation to capture and record these special moments, on a piece of linen with oil colours, that not only you may enjoy and meditate upon, but whom ever takes the time to gaze and reflect upon it, also will.

Free the Mind

oil on canvas - 10 x 14 inches
painted on location -  Scheveningen
SOLD

Don't have the time or possibility to get to the Sea.  Allow me to bring it to you.   Breath in that fresh salty air, allow it to rejuvenate your Spirit, loosen up those murky cobwebs hangin' about!.....  Hard to believe that this was painted just two days ago on the beach here in Holland! Seems we have been spared the winter thus far.  Early in the morning, when the light is just right,  highlighting those waves rolling in. Creating a scene that would inspire goodness and well being, even to the most defiant ones. A gift from Mother Nature to you, and it is there for the taking.

Clouds with a rough sea

oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
Thurs 27 June 2013
SOLD

As Constable once said, "The sky governs everything," Of course he was referring to light and values of colour on a given landscape, or in my case, a seascape. With the sunlight breaking through the scattered voluminous clouds, the sea was giving off an intense deep hue of greenish blue. Not too many people on the beach, however kite surfers enough! I decided to keep it simple, thus providing a generic seascape with the least of elements to give it a reference.

A caring gesture to his very excited daughter who is having a great time in the fresh salty water of the North Sea here in Holland. 'Amy' the jackie looks on evaluating the situation and waits for her little boss to give her a playful command!

At the beach Series # 5a-2013

oil on wood board - 10 x 15 cm
SOLD

A mothers love for her son is as endless as the Sea and Sky itself. The child seems to be pointing at something just out view, in the far distance. The tenderness of the mood, is reflected in the atmosphere of an almost windless breeze, and gentle rolling waves.

Coasting along the North Sea

Coasting along The North Sea
oil on 5 wooden panels, 6" x  20"
22 August 2012 SOLD

Inspired by the 2 mast sailboat, by chance, passing by while I was set up working on a larger peice (next posting), at Wassenaarseslag, I decided to quickly make this smaller format panoramic Seascape. Below is a close up where you can see the vessel splashing and being tossed about, by the waves. As it was rather close to the shoreline I managed to paint the flag and other details, usually not visible on the sailboats featured on most of my seascapes.

Windy Seascape #3, effects of light

oil on wooden panel
4" x 6" -  (10 x 15 cm)
painted on location  -  Mon 16 April 2012  SOLD

Although this is titled as #3, in fact they all should have the same number as they were made simultaneously!  There are few imperfections,..... for example the horizon line is always straighter than the way it has been painted. But then again these are studies, and thus retain the quality of a study. I was aiming at getting the light situation correct, and I can say that, that has been accomplished. If I would go back into the painting, to make corrections, it would loose its quality of freshness. I would risk making this very lively situation appear flat and stale.  And remember a few times I had to keep my hand on the easel, to prevent it from getting airborne!

Windy Seascape study #2/crashing waves

oil on masonite
4.5" x 5.5" - (11 x 14 cm)
painted on location - Mon, 16 April 2012  SOLD

Simular to yesterdays posting, however on close observation you can see many differences. Composition the same, but here you have adition of tree tops of the high dunes. In these conditions the atmosphere is changing by the second, never mind by the minute! I think I'll do this more often, work simutaneously on more than one canvas.

Windy Seascape with 3 Seagulls

oil on masonite
4.5" x 5.5" - (11 x 14 cm)
painted on location - Mon, 16 April 2012

SOLD

Yesterday on location, worked on 5 paintings simutaneously. Mind you all 5 small format. As the wind was way too strong to have any decent size canvas on my easel. I opted for this solution, and glad I did. At the end of the session ended up with 5 smart oil studies of windy, cloudy, seascapes, with warm colors on the sea. In the distance, light bounces off a ship heading due North.
